Within our membership we have groups that gather separately and focus on special interests:
Arts and Crafts group. We meet at the homes of various members to enjoy creating and crafting together. We bring lunch, talk, work, and thoroughly enjoy ourselves. We've had craft shows plus a competition, judged by outside craft experts, for the club members. Those who garner blue ribbons move on to the General Federation of Women’s Club’s District competition. There, over the years, we’re proud to say we’ve won more than our share of blues and reds!
Literary group. We meet at 10:30 a.m. September through June on the third Wednesday of the month at an announced location to discuss the featured book chosen by the group. There are some great discussions! Recently, books we’ve read and discussed include “The Life of Pi," "Glass Castle," "Never Let Me Go," "Middlesex," and "River of Doubt." The Woodbury Library works to borrow the books for us from the Bibliomation system, so that we do not have to buy them.
Members also visit shut-ins, make blankets for sick children, volunteer at the Woodbury Food Bank, collect food for the food bank, clean up our adopted road in Woodbury, participate in the Senior Golf Tournament and the Woodbury Memorial Day Parade. We also collaborate with other helpful groups, including the Lions Club, Soroptomist, and Safe Haven. Through the years we have given not only our time but actual gifts to the town. We donated an American flag and flagpole for the Veterans Memorial Green on Main Street. We've donated books to our town library in memory of deceased members and for special occasions.
Like our sisters before us, we raise money for various community causes, including scholarships, community services, the historic Glebe House and Hurd House museums and Nonnewaug High School’s Grad Night. At Thanksgiving we put together food baskets that are distributed to town residents. We have raised money with special luncheons, theater trips, fashion shows, and raffles. And each December we make and sell holiday items such as hand-made kindling baskets and gift tags.
Our biggest fund-raiser is the annual Woodbury Holiday House Tour. Nearly all of us participate and volunteer to work on the event in one way or another. It is held on the second Saturday in December.
