Past & Present

Women’s clubs, dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service, first became active in the 1860’s, not only in cities and towns across America, but in other countries as well. Woodbury’s own version, the Woman’s Club of Woodbury, was formed in 1896. A year later, four of the founding women made their way to Waterbury by horse and buggy, then boarded a train to Bridgeport to participate in the formation of the state’s incorporation as a part of the nationwide General Federation of Women’s Clubs. That makes the Woman’s Club of Woodbury a charter member in the state’s federation!

Our club grew steadily, always working for the benefit of Woodbury. For 125 years, we have met without interruption, continuing the legacy of our founders. Our yearbook is dedicated “with gratitude to those who went before us. We will always remember we stand on their shoulders as we move forward and continue the work they began.” As they did, we gather in fellowship, volunteer for worthy causes, and raise funds to benefit our community and its people.

Just a sampling from our years of community service:

  • 1913 -- Began the "Forestry Project" involving the planting of 54 maple trees along Main Street.

  • 1926-27 -- Published a booklet of old Woodbury houses titled "Woodbury and the Colonial Homes."  It can be found in the town library.

  • 1967 -- Donated $500 to the Old Woodbury Historical Society toward the restoration of the 17th century Hurd House, on Hollow Road.

  • 1979 -- Helped beautify the entrance to historic Orenaug Park, clearing away vines to reveal the original rock entrance and planting flowering shrubs and annuals.

  • 1986 -- Had the George Washington Bicentennial Maple on the Library lawn replaced by a Moraine Locust tree. We also awarded an $800 scholarship for a Nonnewaug High School student.

  • 2013 -- Had a beautiful tree planted in Hollow Park to honor the memories of the schoolchildren and adults lost in the Newtown tragedy.

  • 2014 -- Donated an American flag and flagpole to the town that was erected on the Veteran's Memorial Green on Main Street.

  • 2015 -- Celebrated the 20th year of its successful and largest fund raiser, the annual holiday open house tour.

  • 2016 -- Awarded $1000 scholarships to two graduating high school seniors and $500 to the middle school for their class trip to Washington, D.C.

Please join us! We meet at 11:00 a.m. on the first Monday of each month, from September to December and February through April, at the Emergency Services Building on Quassuk Road in Woodbury. Each gathering begins with a social gathering and lunch followed by a general meeting and a guest speaker presentation. (What We Do).

Meetings feature an interesting guest speaker or presentation. Topics have included a Marine's experience in Iraq, Autism and Aspergers, Preventing Alcohol and Drug Use Among Youth, Leroy Anderson's Life and Music along with many other local talents.

Our membership, more than 40 strong, is diverse in age, interests and experience. The Woman's Club of Woodbury invites you to join us; contact us and we'll be in touch.

We invite you to learn more about our parent organization, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs at GFWC.
