About Us
In January 1896, sixteen women met in the Library Room of the Town Hall to form what is today the second-oldest ongoing women’s club in Connecticut. In 1897, the Woman’s Club of Woodbury became a charter member of the Connecticut Federation of Women’s Clubs, part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the largest women’s volunteer organization in the world.
The Woman’s Club of Woodbury has grown steadily and, 130 years later, continues to turn fellowship into visible community impact through service, civic leadership, education, and philanthropy.
Across generations, members have used their time and talents to strengthen the Woodbury community. They helped found the Woodbury Historical Society, supported the creation of the Community Nurse Association, established a blood bank at Waterbury Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital, designed and built the entrance to the Orenaug Trail, and members have served on local boards and commissions.
The club’s service has also reached residents directly through visits to shut-ins, food and fuel bank support, participation and support of civic events, public programs, parades, celebrations, memorial plantings, library donations, and advocacy for organizations that help women in need.
Education and philanthropy remain central to that mission. The club provides two annual $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors, offers a $1,500 higher education scholarship for adult women returning to college, and has donated more than $300,000 to the community in recent years.
The Woman’s Club of Woodbury is best known for its annual Holiday House Tour, held on the second Saturday in December. This event opens historic local homes to guests from across the tri-state area, welcomes more than 500 visitors to town, and raises thousands of dollars to support community programs.
Today, more than 50 dedicated members carry forward the legacy of the club’s founders. As the club celebrates 130 years, its enduring purpose remains clear: women working together for the betterment of the community.
